  • Twiga Stars will meet DR Congo on July 10 in away before hosting the team on July 18.

Dar es Salaam. The national women’s football team (Twiga Stars) head coach, Bakari Shime, has expressed his confidence in winning over the DR Congo in the 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers.

Twiga Stars will meet DR Congo on July 10 in away before hosting the team on July 18.

The team head into the match knowing that nothing short of victory will guarantee them a place in the second round of the 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers. The winner of the encounter will face Nigeria.

Shime said his players are doing fine in training and are ready for the encounter.

“Most of the players are ready for the encounter. They are responding well to training. We have no issues troubling us. We are focused on the match,” Shime told The Citizen yesterday over the phone. He said Twiga Stars have the best players, who can make the country fly high and book space into the second round ahead of the Paris Olympics.

Shime said his players know how important the game is and that they are ready for the challenge,” he said.

He added: “From the beginning, my aim has been to guide my team to the 2024 Olympics.”

According to the fixture, Guinea will clash with Ghana while Uganda will take on Rwanda in the East African encounter. Burkina Faso will face Mali in another entertaining fixture in the first round.

A total of 25 teams have entered the Olympic qualifying tournament, with 18 set to be involved in the first round.

The remaining seven, headlined by champions South Africa, are the highest ranked teams from last year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and will join the competition in the second round.
