Congrats, Ndugulile; Now the hard work begins

The election of Dr Faustine Ndugulile as the World Health Organisation's (WHO) Regional Director for Africa is a significant milestone for both Tanzania and the region at large.

Dr Ndugulile, a distinguished medical professional and dedicated public servant, has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment throughout his illustrious career.

His election to this vital role underscores not only his profound expertise but also the deep trust and respect he commands among his peers.

With 25 out of 46 votes secured during the 74th WHO General Assembly in Brazzaville, Congo, on Tuesday, August 27, Dr Ndugulile emerged victorious over formidable contenders from Niger, Rwanda and Senegal.

This accomplishment not only highlights his personal achievements but also enhances Tanzania's stature on the global health stage.

It is a moment of immense pride for our nation, reflecting Tanzania's growing influence in shaping international health policies and strategies.

As the newly appointed WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Ndugulile is entrusted with the daunting task of navigating the continent through a complex landscape of public health challenges.

His leadership is particularly crucial as the African continent, and indeed the world, confronts the ongoing threat of the Mpox outbreak.

This global health crisis demands resolute management and strategic coordination, qualities that Dr Ndugulile has consistently exhibited.

We are confident that his impressive credentials will enable him to work effectively with WHO leadership at headquarters and health authorities across Africa to contain this outbreak and address other pressing health issues.

Dr Ndugulile's commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing essential health services aligns perfectly with the goals of the WHO and the needs of the African population.

His vision is not just a promise but a necessary action plan for advancing public health across the region.

As we congratulate Dr Ndugulile on this remarkable achievement, we also express our unwavering confidence in his ability to steer the African region towards a healthier, more resilient future.

His election serves as both a beacon of hope and a rallying cry for all stakeholders in the quest for better health for all.
