What belongs to you will find you

What you need to know:

  • Life knows you better than you know yourself. And for that reason, every loss, every pain, and every moment of loneliness prepares you for that great meeting. Because what belongs to you does not simply fill what is missing; it completes you, rebuilds you, and makes you whole.

Life is an ocean of searches… A person is a lost traveller among endless waves, sometimes trying to find themselves, sometimes searching for what belongs to them. Yet perhaps this search is unnecessary. Because what truly belongs to you will eventually find you. There comes a moment when the wind ceases, the waves calm, and that thing—a person, a feeling, a dream—finds you. And in that moment, you understand: no matter how distant it seemed, it was always yours.

In My Sweet Orange Tree by José Mauro de Vasconcelos, a profound sentence resonates in young Zezé’s tender heart, reminding us of this truth:
“What belongs to you will find you.”

This sentence is a promise woven with hope. No matter how complex life may seem, it carries the belief that what will complete us will one day find its way to us. However, from Tolstoy’s perspective, this is not just a hope but also a test. Because for what belongs to you to find you, you must first prepare yourself for it.

Without understanding yourself and making sense of the chaos within your soul, you cannot grasp the depth of belonging in life. As Tolstoy said, "Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” And to change yourself is one of life’s most challenging journeys.

On the path of loss

More often than not, life begins with losses. Like Zezé, we encounter the harsh realities of disappointment, loneliness, and pain at an early age. We look at the dreams slipping from our hands and ask ourselves, “Was this what was meant for me?” But in Tolstoy’s view, losses are not the end; they are the beginning of a rebirth. For every loss brings us closer to what truly belongs to us. A person can only appreciate the value of what belongs to them by first feeling its absence. As Tolstoy said, "Suffering is the greatest teacher of the soul.”

Sometimes, our losses are so great that we stop believing anything can complete us. In those moments, even hope feels like a burden. But it is precisely in those moments that life whispers softly, "Wait. What belongs to you will find you.” This whisper does not advise passive waiting but encourages walking forward with courage. Because loss is necessary for a person to understand their inner world. Life turns every loss into a map that guides us to where we truly belong.

The silent promise of what belongs to you

What belongs to you always carries a silent promise. Even if you haven’t yet recognised it, it grows alongside you. It might be a person, a passion, or a journey… Every challenge life throws your way is, in fact, preparing you for it. As Tolstoy often emphasised, "Everything happens at the time it is meant to happen.”

In Zezé’s life, what belongs to him—the love of a friend, the comfort of a tree, the fleeting joy of innocence—takes shape through the things he loses. Sometimes, the meaning of what belongs to you is revealed only through your losses. For something to truly belong to you, you must first earn it.

But this waiting is not a passive stance. Without knowing yourself, without taking brave steps in life, you cannot find what belongs to you. This is where Tolstoy’s philosophy converges with Zezé’s world: What is truly yours will only find you when you walk your own path. When life’s waves carry you to the shore… When the wind changes direction… In that moment, what belongs to you will find you. And suddenly, you will understand why all the pain and losses of the past were necessary.

Life finds you

One day, somewhere along life’s winding road, what belongs to you will find you. But this meeting will not merely complete you; it will transform you. That thing—a person, a memory, a dream—will touch your heart, and you will realise how life has been preparing you for this all along.

As Tolstoy said, "What truly shapes a person is not happiness, but the depth of the suffering they endure.” Like Zezé, when what belongs to you finds you, you will no longer be the person you once were. What belongs to you doesn’t just fill a void; it shapes who you are.

In Tolstoy’s worldview, this meeting is a moment when a person finds peace with themselves. For no one can truly belong to anything without first belonging to themselves. When life unites you with what belongs to you, it is not only a gift but also a triumph of your soul. And in that moment, Zezé’s profound realisation echoes within you: “What belongs to you will find you.”

Life knows you better than you know yourself. And for that reason, every loss, every pain, and every moment of loneliness prepares you for that great meeting. Because what belongs to you does not simply fill what is missing; it completes you, rebuilds you, and makes you whole.

And one day, when you look back, you will understand why everything had to happen the way it did. In that moment, Tolstoy’s words will ring in your mind:
“Happiness is always sought outside of ourselves. But happiness is nothing more than the peace we build within.”
In that moment, you will feel that life has brought you what belongs to you, completed you, and reconnected you to life. Because what belongs to you is not just a gift but also your victory.
