11 Tanzania lady golfers to compete in Kenya event

Dar es Salaam. Eleven prominent Tanzanian lady golfers are set to compete in this year’s Kenya Amateur Ladies Golf Open Stroke Play Championship, scheduled to take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from May 3 to 5.
The number has been reached following the confirmation of over four golfers ahead of the 54-hole event at Karen Golf Club in Nairobi.
The golfers are Yasmin Chali, Queen Siraki, Zainabu Ibrahim, and Aalaa Riyaz Somji, according to Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU) competition secretary-general Rehema Athuman.
Athuman added that the golfers join others, namely Madina Iddi, Neema Olomi, Vicky Elias, Hawa Wanyeche, Loveness Mungure, Rechal Mushi, and Jazira Daniel.
She said that the golfers are now undergoing intensive training ahead of the event, which will also feature golfers from various countries, including the hosts, Kenya.
“The door is still open for Tanzanian golfers to compete in the event. April 30 is the deadline for golfers to confirm their participation. We urge as many lady golfers as possible to do so,” said Rehema. In last year’s event, Iddi clinched the title after recording scores of 78, 74, and 70 over 54 holes at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi. Iddi won by two strokes, securing the title for the fifth time after doing so in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019, recording 222 strokes to edge out Kenya’s Channele Wangari, who scored 224 strokes.
Wangari’s scores were 76, 74, and 74 in the competition, which featured 88 other competitors. Apart from Tanzania and the host country, Kenya, the event also featured golfers from Uganda. Third place was secured by Kenya’s Naomi Wafula, who recorded a total of 227 strokes (76, 78, and 73), while fourth place went to Joyce Wanjiru, with scores of 76, 81, and 75. Mercy Nyanchama, also from Kenya, finished fifth with a total of 235 strokes after recording 77, 83, and 75 strokes.
Another Tanzanian golfer, Vicky Elias, secured sixth place after recording a total of 242 strokes (80, 85, and 77).
She tied with Kenya’s Agnes Nyakio, who scored 80, 83, and 79. Aside from Iddi and Elias, the tourney also featured two other Tanzanians, Rachel Moshi and Loveness Mungure, both from Kili Golf Club.
Rachel finished 41st with a total of 288 strokes, while Loveness was placed 47th with a total of 295 strokes.
