CAF temporarily suspends Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Stadium over poor pitch

What you need to know:

  • CAF will conduct an inspection of Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on 20 March 2025 to assess the improvements made before deciding whether to lift the suspension or extend it

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has temporarily suspended the use of Benjamin Mkapa Stadium due to the continued decline in the quality of its playing surface.

CAF has directed that urgent improvements be made to the pitch to meet the required standards and prevent a prolonged ban on the stadium.

In a statement released today, Wednesday, 12 March 2025, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) confirmed that, as a result of this decision, the CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) quarter-final match between Simba SC and Egypt’s Al Masry, originally scheduled for April 9 at the stadium, must be relocated to an alternative venue.

“To avoid disruptions, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has been instructed to submit the name of an alternative stadium for Simba SC by 14 March 2025.

"CAF will conduct an inspection of Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on 20 March 2025 to assess the improvements made before deciding whether to lift the suspension or extend it,” the statement added.
