Kyerwa. Maxson Sports Club have been crowned champions of the Nsekela Cup 2026 after edging Ruko FC 1-0 in a tightly contested final at Nsekela Stadium in Kyerwa District.
The Kaisho-based side held their nerve in a competitive final against Ruko FC of Kitwechenkura to claim the title and cap an impressive campaign in the tournament.
Hundreds of football fans from Kyerwa and neighbouring areas turned up to witness the final, underlining the growing popularity of football as both a sporting and community development platform in the district.
The Nsekela Cup, sponsored by the Abdulmajid Nsekela Foundation, featured 24 teams drawn from different wards across Kyerwa District, giving young players an opportunity to compete, showcase their abilities and gain valuable match experience.
Beyond the battle for the trophy, the tournament provided an important platform for identifying and nurturing football talent, with more than 500 young people taking part during the competition.
For many of the participants, the tournament offered an opportunity to test themselves in a competitive environment while learning important values associated with sport, including discipline, teamwork, responsibility and commitment.
The foundation says its investment in the competition is part of a broader commitment to using sport to create opportunities for young people and contribute to community development.
Through the Nsekela Cup, the Abdulmajid Nsekela Foundation is seeking to strengthen grassroots sport while helping young people develop their talents and confidence, with the ultimate goal of opening pathways to future opportunities in sport and beyond.
The success of the 2026 edition also highlights the growing role of grassroots football in providing young players with competitive exposure, particularly in areas where opportunities to participate in organised competitions can be limited.
While Maxson Sports Club walked away with the biggest prize, the tournament's wider success was reflected in the hundreds of young players who took part and had the chance to demonstrate their potential.
Maxson's victory therefore marked the climax of the competition, but for many of Kyerwa's young footballers, the Nsekela Cup could prove to be the beginning of a much bigger journey.
