Golf body to embark on schools’ junior programs

Dar es Salaam. Efforts to promote golf at junior level are in place as students in three local schools are set to benefit from free golf lessons should the ongoing interaction between Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) and the earmarked schools is concluded.
The three schools all based in Dar es Salaam earmarked for the program are Oysterbay Primary Secondary, Ali Hassan Mwinyi Primary and the International School of Tanganyika (IST). The program, according to the country’s governing golf body, TGU aims at seeing several other schools from different regions join it for future rapid development.
Golf is among sporting events, which have of a recent gained momentum because of their development, especially at junior level.
According to TGU, the future of Tanzanian golf is hidden among the youth and the local governing body is employing everything possible to attract a new generation of golfers who, apart from playing the game, will be able to take other golf related professions including golf course management, landscaping as well as pursue the business aspects of golf.
TGU Chairman Joseph Tango is endearing himself to schools with the hope of developing passion for the sport and its related aspects among school going population.
He feels that a well exposed youth will be valuable to golf development.
Tango says: “Today, we aspire to recruit future golf players and managers.
“We want to nurture landscapers, and golf course managers”,
“ We will start with three schools in Dar es Salaam before going to other regions. We want to mould personalities that can in the very near future our golf to greater heights. That’s why we will embark on this school initiative”, he was quoted by the union’s website as saying. According to Tango, the students will be introduced to the basics of golf play and developmentHe says that those who will be interested will be assimilated in the various clubs for more coaching. Lugalo Golf Club is among other clubs in the country running youth golf programs.
