Dar es Salaam. Golf professionals and elite amateurs are battling for top honours in the fourth edition of the Lina PGA Tour that teed off yesterday at the Moshi Club golf course in Kilimanjaro Region.

The event, which features 21 renowned professional golfers and 26 elite amateurs, also serves as a tribute to the late Lina Nkya, who played a pivotal role in promoting women golfers on the global stage.

Speaking with The Citizen, the event’s coordinator, Yasmin Chali, emphasized the exceptional nature of the Moshi event, citing a large number of competing golfers and the activities done beforehand. “This is an exceptional event being held in the region where our beloved Mama Lina Nkya passed away and was laid to rest.

The activities and the number of competing golfers truly make the Moshi Lina Tour a fitting tribute,” Yasmin said.

As top professionals and amateurs compete for the top prize, experienced professional golfers also conducted free training for aspiring young golfers.

According to Yasmin, the professional and elite golfers will compete in the 72-hole stroke play format, while other golfers in divisions A, B, ladies, juniors, and seniors will battle it out in a 36-hole stroke play event.

The Lina PGA Tour not only commemorates the late Lina Said Nkya, who passed away on January 19, 2021, but also aims to enhance the skills and standards of both professional and amateur golfers in Tanzania.

Known as the “Mother Golfer,” Lina Nkya made a significant impact on Tanzanian golf by transforming the Kobe Golf Tournament into a nationally-recognized event over 11 years, and pioneering the inclusion of caddies as players.

Organized by the Said Nkya family in collaboration with the Tanzania Ladies Golf Union (TLGU), Tanzania Professional Golfers Association (TPGA), and Penda Golf Tanzania, this 72-hole stroke play tournament is exclusively for Tanzanian professionals and amateur golfers.
