Dar es Salaam. Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha has spoken about the importance of mental health for athletes, both during and after their careers.

"Sometimes people forget that we (athletes) are human beings as well, and it could be difficult to manage the pressure and expectations," Okocha said during a visit to Tanzania to promote the 2024 Veteran World Cup Championship.

Okocha, who is considered one of the greatest African footballers of all time, said that staying busy and having a plan B are two key things that can help retired athletes maintain their mental health.

"Football provides a foundation to build upon; it is a very short career," he said. "Most of the athletes are doing better today compared to our time because there is more awareness, unlike during our time when everything was analogue."

Okocha also talked about the importance of seeking help if needed.

"If you are struggling, don't be afraid to talk to someone," he said. "There are many resources available to help you, and you don't have to go through this alone."

Okocha's message of hope and resilience is an important one for athletes of all ages. Mental health is a crucial part of overall well-being, and it is important to remember that you are not alone. If you are struggling, please reach out for help.
