Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) President Wallace Karia, on March 12, 2025, was elected as a member of the African football governing body (CAF) Executive Committee, representing the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) zone.
Karia, who also serves as CECAFA’s president, was the sole candidate for the position and secured the majority of votes during the elections held yesterday at the Marriott Hotel in Cairo, Egypt.
He became the sole candidate following the withdrawal of Uganda’s football governing body (FUFA) president, Moses Magogo, who was previously a member of the CAF Executive Committee.
Karia is now the third Tanzanian to hold a seat on the CAF Executive Committee. The others were the late Said El Maamry, who served in the position in the 1980s before being appointed as an honorary member in the 1990s, and Leodgar Tenga.
His victory was witnessed by several Tanzanian football officials who accompanied him to Egypt. These included TFF Vice President Athuman Nyamlani, TFF Secretary General Wilfred Kidao, TFF President’s Advisor Philemon Ntahilaja, African Club Association Chairman and Lindi Football Association Chairman Hosea Lugano, and Simba Board of Directors member Salim “Try Again” Abdallah.
The election also saw former Cameroon and Barcelona star Samuel Eto’o secure a seat on the CAF Executive Committee, representing the Central African region (UNIFFAC). Eto’o, who is also the President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT), won unopposed, similar to Karia, receiving overwhelming support from voters.
Other winners in the CAF Executive Committee elections include Ghana’s Kurt Okraku, Liberia’s Mustapha Raji, and Algeria’s Sadhi Walid.
Meanwhile, CAF President Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected for another five-year term after running unopposed. Motsepe will now lead CAF until 2029, following the completion of his first term, which began in 2021.
