Mwakinyo braces for Katembo test as international fight heats-up

Dar es Salaam. Congolese professional boxer Kuvesa Katembo, who is to face famous professional boxer in the country Hassan Mwakinyo, is scheduled to arrive in the country three days before their fight.
Katembo, who resides in South Africa, will step into the boxing ring on April 23 at the Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma to fight Mwakinyo in the international non-title super welterweight bout.
Speaking with The Citizen yesterday, the bout organizer, Sophia Mwakagenda, who is the managing director of Lady in Red Boxing Promotions, said they have already signed a contract with Katembo from the DR Congo ahead of the contest.
Mwakagenda said Katembo, who is to be accompanied by his trainer and official, will have to attend a weigh-in exercise one day before the bout as per the boxing rules and regulations.
“I can confirm that Mwakinyo’s opponent will be in the country three days before the fight as per the boxing rules and regulations. He will undergo a medical examination during a weigh-in exercise,” said Mwakagenda. She said the bout is expected to be fierce as per the records of the two boxers. Mwakinyo has a record of 20 wins (14 on knockouts) and three loses while Kavesha has 14 wins, seven loses and one draw.
The Mwakinyo-Katembo contest would be witnessed by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa as the official guest and spiced by some MPs’ undercard fights of four rounds. Some of those MPs to show their fighting skills are Januari Makamba, Joseph Kasheku Musukuma and others.
The purpose of the Mwakinyo fight is to collect funds for buying 40,000 sanitary towels for girl students in Southern Highland regions including Iringa, Mbeya, Njombe and Ruvuma.
Mwakinyo last fought on September 3 last year against English boxer Liam Smith in Liverpool, England, and lost by TKO in the fourth round. Katembo’s last appearance in the boxing ring was in October 2, last year and won on points.
Before Mwakinyo stepping into the ring, boxer Ibrahim Najum will fight Laurent Segu in the super lightweight contest while Nakato Mchemba will take on Alibaba Tarimo and Feriche Mashauri will face Chiedza Homakoma.
Female fights will involve boxer Jesca Mfinanga against Salma Ally, Happy Daudi vs Hawa Newton and Sarafina Bela against Halima Bandola.
