Dar es Salaam. Young Africans (Yanga) striker Clement Mzize is the only Tanzanian player in the fierce battle for the golden boot in the Mainland Tanzania Premier League.
The young forward has displayed remarkable goal-scoring prowess and is now in a tight race against six foreign players, all vying for the league’s top scorer accolade.
Mzize has been in stellar form for Yanga this season, netting an impressive 10 goals.
His goal tally places him in direct competition with two other top scorers, his teammate, Zimbabwean Prince Dube, and Simba SC’s Ivorian striker Jean Ahoua who have also recorded 10 goals each.
For Mzize, leading the Golden Boot race as the only Tanzanian player among a sea of foreign stars is a significant achievement.
His performances have earned him recognition as one of the most promising young talents in Tanzanian football.
With several matches still to play, Mzize has a golden opportunity to extend his goal tally and claim the top scorer’s award.
His competition is fierce, but if he maintains his scoring form, he could become the first Tanzanian player in recent years to win the Golden Boot in a league increasingly dominated by foreign players.
Tight race for the top scorer title
The race remains wide open as the league heads into its crucial stages.
Apart from Mzize, Dube, and Ahoua, four more foreign players are in contention for the prestigious Golden Boot award.
Kenyan forward Elvis Rupia, who plays for Singida Black Stars, and Cameroonian striker Leonel Ateba of Simba SC have each netted eight goals so far.
Further down the list, Yanga’s Ivorian attacking midfielder Pacome Zouzoua and Kagera Sugar’s Ugandan forward Peter Lwasa have each scored seven goals.
Though they currently trail the leaders, a strong performance in the upcoming fixtures could see them surge ahead in the rankings.
Golden Glove race hots up
While the race for the Golden Boot remains highly competitive, the battle for the Golden Glove award, given to the league’s best goalkeeper, is also intensifying.
Simba SC’s shot-stopper Mousa Camara currently leads the clean sheet rankings with an impressive 15 shutouts, highlighting his dominance between the posts.
Trailing Camara are Mashujaa FC’s Patrick Munthali and Yanga’s reliable goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, both with 10 clean sheets.
Their solid performances have helped their teams maintain strong defensive records, keeping them in the race for the coveted Golden Glove award.
Azam FC’s Sudanese goalkeeper Mohammed Mustafa follows closely with nine clean sheets, while Pamba Jiji FC’s Yona Amos has managed eight.
Singida Black Stars’ Metacha Mnatha and JKT Tanzania’s Yakoub Suleiman have each recorded seven clean sheets, making the Golden Glove competition one to watch as the season nears its conclusion.
