Simba back to winning ways

Dar es Salaam. Two goals scored by Zambian striker Moses Phiri and one from John Bocco were enough for Simba to emerge with a comfortable 3-1 victory against Polisi Tanzania in the ongoing Mainland Tanzania NBC Premier League at the Ushirika Stadium in Moshi yesterday.

Bocco scored in the 33rd minute, while Phiri added another two goals in 44th and 52nd minutes to take the team to second place in the league standings with 31 points from 14 matches.

Polisi Tanzania are now placed 14th with nine points from 14 matches.

Polisi Tanzania’s goal was scored by Zuberi Hamisi after he was set clear by Pius Buswita in the 90th minute.

Simba’s rivals, Young Africans (Yanga), are at the top of the league standings with 32 points from 12 matches while Azam FC were third with 29 points before their match against Coastal Union at the Azam Complex in Dar es salaam last evening.

Phiri’s goals put him in second place in the golden boot award race with eight goals. Yanga’s Fiston Mayele leads the race with ten goals.

Speaking’s after the match, Simba’s head coach Juma Mgunda commended his players for their performance in the match.

“We played well compared to our previous match against Mbeya City, which we drew 1-1. We are now back to our winning ways and the focus is now on our next match against Coastal Union,” said Mgunda.

He admitted that the league is tough and gaining momentum and they are targeting to do the best and win the title. “We faced strong opposition from Polisi Tanzania, and the team fought hard to record the positive results,” he said.

Polisi Tanzania assistant coach John Tamba said his played made mistakes and allowed Simba to score three goals.

“We are not in the good position although we are still in the first round. We need to strengthen our squad in before starting the second round,” he said.

The league continues today when Kagera Sugar face Mtibwa Sugar at the Manungu Complex in Turiani, Morogoro, from 2pm and KMC meet Tanzania Prisons at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
