Dar es Salaam. Leading gaming body in the country, SportPesa Limited, has handed over Sh100 million to the new Vodacom Premier League champions, Simba SC as a token for their triumph.

The Msimbazi Street side, who had not won the league for the past four seasons, will also pocket Sh80 million from the league’s main sponsor, Vodacom Tanzania.

Speaking during the hand-over ceremony at the company’s office in Dar es Salaam yesterday, SportPesa Director of Administration and Compliance, Tarimba Abbas praised the Simba management for a glorious season. Tarimba said they are very proud to hand over the team such a huge amount of money as part of their sponsorship obligation to the club.

He said SportPesa Tanzania appreciates the partnership with the club and harboured hope that the team and officials will be spurred to add another title next year.

“First and foremost, I would like to congratulate everyone at Simba SC for making their fans proud let alone we SportPesa as their main sponsor. We now fulfil one of the promises we committed ourselves to, when we signed the sponsorship agreement with this club a year ago by handing over Sh100 million as a bonus for all members of the team who made this success possible,” said Tarimba.

Simba Vice President, Iddi Kajuna thanked the firm for showing respecting their contract and promised to continue winning trophies in the coming seasons.

“We are very proud to have SportPesa as our main sponsor and we thank them for the support they have shown us this season. They helped prepare well for this season from the management level all the way to the technical bench that’s why we were able to win the title,” he said.

“I would personally like to thank SportPesa on behalf of soccer fans in Tanzania for the efforts they have made so far in revolutionising the most liked sport in this country and Simba is a living example to that. We are very grateful and we will honour this partnership for the remaining four years,” said Kajuna.

Simba are among the four Tanzanian teams, which will feature in the second edition of the eight-team knockout competition dubbed SportPesa Super Cup, which will be hosted in Kenya from June 3 to June 10.

Other Tanzanian teams for the tournament are Young Africans, Singida United and JKU from Zanzibar. The teams will play against Kenyan counterparts, Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Kakamega HomeBoys and Kariobangi Sharks.

Apart from pocketing $30,000 (Sh68million), the winner of the tournament will travel to United Kingdom to play Everton FC at Goodison Park.
