Tanzania eyes nine disciplines at All Africa Games in Ghana

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has officially confirmed its participation in the upcoming All Africa Games scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, from March 8 to 23.

That was revealed by the National Sports Council (NSC) secretary General, Neema Msitha, in the interview with The Citizen yesterday.

Ms Msitha outlined the various categories of sports in which Tanzania will actively be involved in during the multi-sport event.

She said that Tanzanian athletes will take part in nine sports during the 13th edition of the African Games. The selected sports include athletics, amateur boxing, cricket, swimming, cycling, beach volleyball, Judo, Karate, and women’s football.

This comprehensive list underscores the country's commitment to showcasing its sporting prowess in sports. It's noteworthy that, except for women's football, the remaining games will feature both male and female players, with runners required to meet specific threshold qualifying marks as stipulated by the sporting rules and regulations.

Emphasizing the significance of merit, Ms Msitha said that sportsmen and women in the Games will solely depend on the recommendations from the respective sports associations.

The selection process aims at ensuring ensure that the most qualified and skilled individuals represent the nation on the continental stage. Sports associations have been directed to submit their proposed lists of players to the NSC, where scrutiny will be based on both merit and the budget allocated by the government. Ms Msitha noted that the exact number of participants from Tanzania will ultimately depend on the budget allocated by the government.

“The compilation of the budget for the All Africa Games has not yet been finalised, and until that until it has been determined, the specific number of athletes representing the country remains uncertain. A special committee is coordinating the process, working in conjunction with respective sports associations, diligently preparing the proposed lists of players,” said Msitha.

The All Africa Games, a prestigious sporting event, will feature the participation of 53 nations. The grand spectacle is set to take place at the Accra Borteyman Olympic Standard Stadium, a facility promising an optimal platform to showcase athletes’ skills and competences.
