Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania National Basketball League (NBL) kicks off today in Dodoma, featuring 21 teams from across the country, with 13 men’s teams and eight women’s teams.
The opening match will see defending women’s champions Fox Divas of Mara face Bright Queens of Dodoma at 4:00 pm at the Chinangali Court.
Men’s defending champions Dar City lead a competitive field that includes Outsiders, Kisasa Heroes, Dodoma Spurs, JKT, Young Warriors, Home Boys, Wavuja Jasho, Pamoja, Don Bosco Panthers, Planet, Manyara, and Mbeya Flames.
The season will run until December 6, 2025, with the winners earning the chance to represent Tanzania in the next season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL).
Speaking to The Citizen, Tanzania Basketball Federation Secretary-General Mwenze Kabinda confirmed that all preparations are complete and that Deputy Minister of Culture, Arts, and Sports Hamis Mwinjuma alias Mwana FA will be the guest of honour at the opening matches. Kabinda noted that while 28 teams were initially expected, some withdrew due to unavoidable circumstances.
He highlighted the league’s growing importance in developing Tanzania’s basketball ecosystem and preparing teams for continental competition.
In a move set to motivate players, BetPawa has announced a locker room bonus for all participating teams, aimed at rewarding dedication and performance throughout the season.
The bonus will be awarded to teams after every match, adding an extra incentive for both men’s and women’s sides to perform at their best.
Organizers hope the gesture will boost competitiveness and showcase the league as a premier platform for basketball talent in Tanzania.
