Dar es Salaam. Three Tanzanian golfers are starting their quest for silverware today at the Africa Championships, which are taking place at the prestigious Leopard Creek Country Club in South Africa.

The trio consists of Madina Iddi and Vicky Elias, who will compete in the Africa Women’s Invitational Championship, and Samwel Kileo from Lugalo, who will participate in the Men’s Africa Amateur Championship.

The golfers are eager to make an impression in this competition, which features some of the continent’s best talents.

In an interview with The Citizen yesterday, Madina expressed her confidence despite the strong competition they will face.

She mentioned that, having played at Leopard Creek before, they are somewhat familiar with both the course and South Africa’s climate.

“We have trained intensively for this prestigious tournament. This is a golden opportunity for us, and we are determined to make the country proud. I have analysed my past performances and will rectify any mistakes to perform even better,” said Madina.

Vicky, on the other hand, emphasized her readiness to compete and prove herself on a big stage.

“This is my second time participating in the tournament, and I have learned from past mistakes. I aim to make a strong impression and perform exceptionally well,” she said.

Meanwhile, Kileo, who will be making his debut in South Africa, remains optimistic, drawing confidence from his previous experience in international competitions.

“I have competed in the International Military Sports Council (CISM) events and performed well,” he said.

Now, I am prepared to push even harder and achieve my best results in this championship,” Kileo remarked.

The tournament, hosted at the Leopard Creek Country Club, is considered one of the finest golf courses in Africa. Located near the Malelane Gate of Kruger National Park, it offers a challenging layout with breathtaking scenery.

Last year’s edition was dominated by South Africa’s Kyra van Kan, who clinched victory with an impressive nine-stroke lead over compatriot Bobbi Brown, finishing with a one-under-par total of 215. Kyra maintained her lead across all three rounds to secure the title.

For Madina, Vicky, and Kileo, this championship presents a golden opportunity to showcase their talent on a grand stage. With their preparation and determination, they aim to contend for top honors and make Tanzania proud.
