TGU applauds government for including golf in Umitashumta, Umisseta Games

Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) extends its appreciation to the government for its decision to include golf in the forthcoming Inter-Primary (Umitashumta) and Secondary (Umisseta) School games slated for next year.

During the official commencement of this year’s games in Tabora Region last Saturday, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa announced the incorporation of golf into the 2025 edition of Umitashumta and Umisseta, endorsing a proposal advocated by Culture, Arts, and Sports Minister Damas Ndumbaro.

He said the addition will be limited to five regions in the country that currently have golf courses.

The regions will have schools participating in the golf competition, fostering a new generation of golfers. According to his plan, teachers will receive professional training from golf experts.

This initiative aims to equip educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach golf to their students, thereby promoting and developing the sport at the grassroots level.

By incorporating golf into the school sports curriculum, Tanzania can cultivate young talent and foster a deeper appreciation for the sport.

Gilman Kasiga, the chairman of TGU, conveyed in an interview with The Citizen yesterday that this development would not only serve to promote the sport but also aid in the identification of promising golfers for both club and national teams. Kasiga underscored the historical focus of the Umitashumta and Umisseta competitions on athletics, football, and netball.

He remarked, “We express our gratitude to the government for embracing golf in the Umitashumta and Umisseta Games.

This incorporation will ensure the game’s presence at the grassroots level and expand its influence throughout the nation,” said Kasiga.
