Our mission to drive sustainable economic growth across Africa has remained steadfast, and Tanzania stands as a shining example of our commitment to transform the continent.

Over the past six decades, the relationship between AfDB and Tanzania has blossomed into a powerful alliance that has catalyzed development and uplifted millions of lives.

Tanzania: A Strategic Partner in Africa's Development

Tanzania’s role in the African Development Bank’s history is profound. Since the early years of our collaboration, Tanzania has been a key partner, and our joint efforts have consistently aimed at fostering economic stability, reducing poverty, and promoting inclusive growth.

From the bustling streets of Dar es Salaam to the fertile fields of the Southern Highlands, the AfDB's presence has been felt across the nation, driving transformative projects that resonate with our shared vision for a prosperous and self-reliant Africa.

Our partnership with Tanzania began in the early years following the country’s independence, a time when the young nation was laying the foundations for its future. The AfDB recognized the immense potential of Tanzania, and together, we embarked on a series of ambitious projects that have since become pillars of the country’s development.

From infrastructure and agriculture to energy and education, our interventions have been designed to support Tanzania’s strategic priorities, fostering an environment where growth and opportunity can thrive.

Infrastructure: Building the Backbone of Progress

The African Development Bank (AfDB) supported the construction of high-capacity airport infrastructure on USD 272.12 million loan to meet the expected growth in air transport.

Infrastructure development has been at the core of our collaboration with Tanzania. AfDB has consistently invested in projects that enhance connectivity, improve access to essential services, and boost economic productivity.

A prime example is the transformative work done in the transport sector, where our investments have improved road networks, ports, and airports, facilitating trade and movement across the nation. One of our flagship projects in Tanzania is the upgrading of the Mtwara Corridor, a crucial artery linking the southern regions to the rest of the country and beyond.

This project has not only opened up new economic opportunities for the people of Mtwara, Lindi, and Ruvuma but has also strengthened Tanzania’s position as a regional trade hub. By improving access to markets, the AfDB has helped Tanzanian businesses grow, creating jobs and contributing to the country’s overall economic development.

Energy: Powering Tanzania’s Future

Energy is another sector where AfDB's impact in Tanzania has been profound. We have partnered with the government to expand access to electricity, particularly in rural areas, where the benefits of reliable power are transformative. Our support for the development of hydropower and renewable energy projects is aligned with Tanzania’s aspirations to achieve energy security and sustainability.

The construction of the Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project, a regional initiative involving Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi, is a testament to our commitment to regional integration and sustainable energy solutions. Once completed, this project will significantly boost electricity generation, providing a stable power supply to millions of Tanzanians and supporting the country’s industrialization agenda.

Agriculture: Sustaining Livelihoods and Food Security

African Development Bank support will give the agricultural sector and value chain entrepreneurs’ greater access to the financial and non-financial services of the Tanzanian Agricultural Development Bank (TADB).

Agriculture is the backbone of Tanzania’s economy, and AfDB has been a steadfast partner in supporting this vital sector. Our investments in agricultural infrastructure, irrigation systems, and value chains have helped increase productivity, enhance food security, and improve the livelihoods of millions of Tanzanian farmers.

The Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) is a prime example of how our partnership has borne fruit. Through SAGCOT, we have supported the transformation of the agricultural sector, turning it into a powerful engine for economic growth. By promoting sustainable farming practices, improving market access, and facilitating private sector investment, AfDB has helped Tanzanian farmers increase their incomes and contribute to the nation’s food security.

Education and Skills Development: Empowering the Next Generation

AfDB recognizes that education and skills development are critical to Tanzania’s future. Over the years, we have supported numerous initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education, expanding access to learning opportunities, and equipping the youth with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Our investments in vocational training and higher education have played a pivotal role in building a skilled workforce capable of driving Tanzania’s industrialization and economic diversification efforts. By empowering the next generation of Tanzanians, the AfDB is helping to lay the groundwork for sustained economic growth and social progress.

Tanzania and AfDB: Shared Vision for the Future

Dr Patricia Laverley, AfDB Tanzania Country Manager.

As we celebrate the 60 years of partnership, the African Development Bank remains committed to supporting Tanzania on its journey towards achieving its Vision 2025 goals and beyond. Our relationship with Tanzania is built on mutual respect, shared aspirations, and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Looking to the future, AfDB will continue to be a reliable partner in Tanzania’s quest for sustainable development. We will focus on areas that have the greatest potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for all Tanzanians. Together, we will continue to harness the power of innovation, regional integration, and inclusive growth to build a resilient and prosperous Tanzania.

Conclusion

On this 60th anniversary of African Development Bank, it is an honor to celebrate our 60th anniversary with our cherished partner, Tanzania. The story of Tanzania’s development is one of determination, resilience, and vision, and AfDB is proud to have played a role in this remarkable journey.

As we embark on the next chapter of our partnership, we remain committed to driving sustainable economic growth, not only in Tanzania but across the entire African continent.

Together, we will continue to build a brighter, more prosperous future for all.
