Baraka Shamte poised for return to CCM after expulsion

Veteran party Cadre Baraka Shamte shakes hand with President Mwinyi at a recent event

Unguja. Controversial ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) cadre Baraka Shamte, 85, may soon rejoin the party two years after he was expelled for gross misconduct, which included sharp criticisms of the presidency.

CCM has praised Shamte for his courage and patriotism, noting his ability to resist what they describe as manipulations and deceptions by the opposition while continuing to support the party.

The party's acknowledgment of Shamte’s recent remarks about developments in Zanzibar reflects his integrity and understanding of the truth.

Khamis Mbetto Khamis, Secretary of the Special NEC Committee for Ideology and Propaganda, emphasized Shamte's longstanding reputation as a courageous individual.

He pointed out that Shamte, a politician since the days of the Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP), had previously deviated from the party's principles, leading to his expulsion.

"He has recognized the efforts of the eighth phase government and the steps taken by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar under President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi. Procedures to formally restore his membership will be initiated," Mbetto stated.

Mbetto also described Shamte as a key stakeholder in development, highlighting his appreciation for the efficiency of the SMZ (Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar) and his dedication to the nation.

"He has served Zanzibar since the colonial era, holding positions such as Deputy Secretary-General of the ASP Youth League and district secretary of CCM. Even after losing his membership, he did not waver. He has remained dignified, and we will proceed with efforts to restore his membership," Mbetto added.

Additionally, Mbetto noted that Shamte has consistently wished well for CCM, which explains his rejection of offers from other political parties seeking to recruit him.

"He has witnessed the effective governance of Dr. Mwinyi's administration and has embraced the truth based on his commitment to national development and public service," he explained.

Mbetto affirmed that CCM recognizes its historical contributions to Zanzibar, and constitutional meetings will be convened to address requirements and make further resolutions.

"Initially, he did not fully grasp the goals and intentions of President Dr. Mwinyi, both in the short and long term. Stumbling is not falling. He has reflected, corrected himself, and will now be actively involved in advancing our development agenda," Mbetto concluded.

In June 2022, the veteran cadre  Shamte, in a video clip which went viral on social media platforms, criticised government authorities over certain decisions that he claimed did not resonate with the electorate.

Mr Shamte was then summoned to the Madema police station to answer charges of uttering seditious content against government authorities in Zanzibar.

In the hours that followed his interrogation at the police station, goons attacked the elderly cadre, beat him to pulp and was later expelled from the party.
