After nine years of nurturing the film industry and celebrating cinematic excellence, the Foundation is now turning its focus to revolutionize the world of television series, spotlighting the art of scriptwriting in Zanzibar.
Announced at a vibrant launching event on August 10, which also celebrated the winners of the Emerson Awards 2024 and 2021, this new award promises to spark a creative renaissance.
The Emerson Zanzibar Foundation’s administrator and public relations coordinator, Dismas Sekibaha, highlighted that this shift marks a significant departure from the Foundation’s traditional focus.
“We’re evolving,” Sekibaha stated, adding that, “While our past efforts centred on films, the Series Scriptwriting Award 2025 is all about series scripts.
Our aim is to broaden the horizon of scriptwriting and prepare these scripts for the next stages of film production.”
This innovative award event offers aspiring scriptwriters an unprecedented opportunity to make their mark. Key to the Series Scriptwriting Awards 2025 is its robust commitment to development.
Winning scripts will benefit from comprehensive mentorship and refinement, turning concepts into polished pilots ready for the limelight. Experienced industry professionals will lend their expertise throughout this transformative process.
In addition to gaining recognition, the winners will have a chance to pitch their series ideas to major television broadcasting companies, bridging the gap between budding talents and the industry insiders.
This exposure is set to pave the way for Zanzibar’s next major television success.
Sekibaha also outlined the awards’ criteria, emphasizing the importance of originality and a deep connection to Zanzibar’s cultural tapestry.
“We’re looking for scripts that are truly original, with well-developed characters and a compelling narrative flow,” he said.
“To ensure the highest standards, we’ll be involving veteran writers and film producers as judges,” he added.
The Foundation is inviting script ideas based on three exciting themes that capture the essence of life in Zanzibar, blending traditional elements with contemporary issues.
Scripts that explore the rich history and modern realities of the Swahili Coast and multi-layered storylines reflecting the interconnected lives and cultures of Zanzibar.
The Series Scriptwriting Awards 2025 are not just a competition; it’s a catalyst for change in Zanzibar’s television industry.
By elevating local talents and fostering ground-breaking storytelling, the Emerson Zanzibar Foundation is setting the stage for a new era.
This initiative promises to be a pivotal moment for the island’s entertainment scene, offering both writers and audience an exciting and dynamic future in television storytelling.
