  • The Green and Smart Cities SASA Programme is designed to drive green infrastructure investments and stimulate local economic growth in Mwanza, Tanga, and Pemba.

Pemba. The European Union (EU) and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar have jointly launched the Green and Smart Cities SASA Programme in Pemba, marking a significant milestone in the island's urban development and environmental sustainability efforts.

With a substantial investment of Sh190 billion , the programme is a key component of the broader Team Europe Initiative, which encompasses contributions from EU member states and various institutions.

The launch ceremony, held in Pemba, was attended by notable figures including Zanzibar’s Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, Natural Resource, and Livestock, Mr. Shamata Shaame Khamis, and the EU Ambassador to Tanzania, Ms. Christine Grau.

The event also saw the participation of senior government officials from the President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG) and local authorities, underscoring the collaborative spirit of the initiative.

The Green and Smart Cities SASA Programme is designed to drive green infrastructure investments and stimulate local economic growth in Mwanza, Tanga, and Pemba.

The Pemba segment of the programme focuses on three pivotal projects—Kijani Pemba, Pure, and Inclu-Cities.

With a combined budget of Sh17.5 billion, these projects are being implemented by the NGOs Lvia and Oikos in partnership with the Belgian development agency Enabel.

These initiatives aim to revolutionize urban infrastructure and enhance basic services in Pemba.

Key objectives include improving water and waste management systems, developing public spaces, and creating economic opportunities for youth, women, and small businesses.

Specific areas of focus include seaweed farming and waste recycling, which are expected to bring about significant economic and environmental benefits to the local communities.

Speaking during the launch, Ambassador Christine Grau expressed her enthusiasm for the programme’s potential impact.

“I am very happy to officially celebrate with you all the start of these initiatives and reaffirm our commitment to achieving tangible results soon,” she stated.

“In one or two years, we expect to see schools with better conditions for your children, communities with improved public spaces, less waste, better water supply and sanitation, reduced flooding, and safer, more efficient markets.”

The Green and Smart Cities SASA Programme will support the development of crucial urban infrastructure, including the construction and renovation of schools, markets, and public spaces.

Additionally, the programme will enhance essential services such as water supply and waste management in North and South Pemba.

By focusing on these areas, the initiative aims to improve living conditions, bolster local economies, and foster a sustainable urban environment.
