Former ZEC chairman Jecha Salum Jecha has died, to be buried in Zanzibar

Unguja. Former Zanzibar Electoral Commission (Zec) chairman, Jecha Salum Jecha has passed away today, Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at the Lugalo Military Referral Hospital in Dar es Salaam.

Speaking to The Citizen, the Deputy Secretary General of Chama Cha Mapindzi (CCM) Zanzibar, Dr. Muhamed Dimwa, said the party has received with regret the news of Jecha’s death.

"This is a big tragedy even our Vice Chairman of the party (Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi) has stopped his visit to Pemba for his burial," he said.

President Mwinyi was on a tour of Zanzibar that kicked off on Saturday July 15 where he addressed party cadres and inspected projects

Jecha whose name became famous after he nullified the 2015 General Election in Zanzibar on grounds that it lacked the threshold of being a free and fair election, an election that CUF claimed it had won.

In 2020, Jecha surprised many when he declared his candidature for Zanzibar’s Presidency after he picked nomination forms on CCM’s ticket.
