Unguja,  Motorists in Zanzibar will continue digging deeper into their pockets following the latest fuel price caps announced by utilities regulator Zura.

According to the Zanzibar Utilities Regulatory Authority (Zura), the price of petrol has increased by Sh186 from Sh3,001 to Sh3,187, or 6 percent, while diesel has increased by Sh41 from Sh3,282 to Sh3,323, or 1 percent.

Announcing the prices today, November 8, 2023, which take effect from November 9, 2023, Zura's Communications Manager, Mbaraka Hassan Haji, cited rising oil prices in the global market, the cost of importation, OPEC+ decision to cut production, among the reasons for the rise.

In another move, jet fuel will be sold at Sh2,976, up from Sh2,768, or 7 percent, while kerosene will rise from Sh2,921 to Sh3,300, or 13 percent.

Haji said that Zanzibar has enough oil to meet demand and that there is no shortage of the resource at present.

He also cited other factors for the increase, including the rising cost of the products in the global market and the rising cost of importing the energy.

"Other factors considered in setting fuel prices include the cost of importing petroleum products into the port of Dar es Salaam, the value of the Tanzanian shilling against the US dollar, transportation costs, insurance and premium to Zanzibar, government taxes, and the profit margin for wholesalers and retailers," he said.
