Dar es Salaam. NMB Bank Plc has poured Sh200 million into sponsoring the 2024 Mapindizi Cup tournament that kicked off today December 28, at the Amaan Complex Arena in Zanzibar.

The amount includes Sh100 million that will be used to award the winners of the competition while the remainder has been spent on buying sports gear.

NMB Zanzibar Branch Manager Naima Said Shaame said the bank’s sponsorship aligns with the Government’s efforts to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Glorious Revolution of Zanzibar.

“As one of the biggest development sector stakeholders in Zanzibar, we felt duty bound to be part of these celebrations. We have been supporting the Mapinduzi Cup since its inception and we believe our support will help to make this year’s tournament bigger and better.

“Apart from handing over a grand prize of Sh100 million, the bank has also donated tracksuits for various leaders and diplomats who will take part in a training run or walk to signalise the opening of the tournament.

“This is not the end of our sponsorship. We will announce other sponsorship initiatives soon after reaching agreements with the responsible ministry. As a bank, we will continue partnering with the Government to enhance sports development across the country. NMB Bank believes sports not only contributes to our well-being, but also brings us together as a nation,” Shaame said.

For her part, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports Fatma Hamad Rajab, during the event, commended the bank for its timely support for the 2024 Mapinduzi competition as the ministry has been struggling to find sponsors.

“The bank’s sponsorship now gives us faith that the next year’s Mapinduzi Cup will be successful. We have already received the cash for the winners of the tournament and other prizes for the top scorer, Best Disciplined Team, Best Goal keeper and these will be handed over in the presence of the Zanzibar President,” said Rajab.

She reiterated the ministry’s commitment to continue partnering with various stakeholders in Zanzibar to propel sports development.

“Partnership with various sports development stakeholders will ensure the growth of sports in a long run. I take this opportunity to encourage other companies to come on board and support the government’s efforts in sports development,” she added.
