The best is yet to come for Zanzibar, says Mwinyi

The President of Zanzibar, Hussein Mwinyi has on Wednesday said the isle’s economy is now in the better stage than two years ago when he came into power.

He further promised that that they will be much better than the previous years, the president said adding that his government has set its priority on infrastructure.

Speaking in the isles while addressing the journalist as he marks two years since he became president, Mwinyi said his first priority in next two years will be construction of major and modern ports in Unguja and Pemba, main roads and modern airports.

“I’m happy that all of what I’m saying are in the process and its implementation is almost kicking off, the Mangapwani port will be one of its kind  and will change the Zanzibar’s economy and ports in Pemba will be modern that can serve big ships,”

He added: My expectation is that in two years the stories will be different.

Speaking earlier on Saturday at State House President Mwinyi said Zanzibar has in the past two years Zanzibar has attracted 181 projects worth $3 billion in projects that have been registered by ZIPA (Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority).

“These project of which most are in the hospitality sector, if implemented as projected are set to create some 11289 jobs,” he said.

According to him, there is every indication that Zanzibar’s economy has taken a recovery trajectory despite the two years of shock which came due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine which has shaken the global economy.

“In the tourism sector the number of arrivals has increased tremendously to the extent that for the first time Zanzibar Airport has surpassed Julius Nyerere in Dar es Salaam.”
