Unguja. The government of Zanzibar has reiterated its commitment to improve the enabling environment that will attract more visitors and investment in the isles.

By cooperating with stakeholders, the government expects to further promote tourism which contributes 30 percent of the government revenue.

Zanzibar Minister for Tourism and Heritage, Mr Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga, said there is room for improving the performance of the sector.

Mr Soraga was speaking at a stakeholder meeting held on February 15 to strengthen good cooperation between the government and private players in the tourism sector.

Tourism stakeholders

The meeting was organised by the Zanzibar Tourism Commission (ZCT) and attended by various stakeholders, including Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors (Zati), Zanzibar Association of Tours Operators (Zato) and Hotel Association Zanzibar (HAZ), among others.

"We met to inform the stakeholders of the government strategies on the tourism sector as well as listening to their opinions so that together we can develop the sector," said Mr Soraga.

However, he said that some tourism areas still do not have official revenue collection systems, which leads to a loss of revenue.

The government is working to solve the challenge, he said.

For his part, ZCT executive director, Ms Hafsa Mbamba, emphasised the need for stakeholders to conduct capacity building for locals so that they are aware of the opportunities they can benefit from the tourism sector.

"Together, we have the power to forge a prosperous path for our tourism sector, benefiting our nation as a whole. I am confident that the outcomes of our discussions will be instrumental in shaping a bright future for tourism in Zanzibar," she said.

One of the stakeholders, Ms Heleni Peeks, thanked the government for conducting the meeting which enabled them to know the tourism roadmap.

Meanwhile, ZCT launched "Tourism in Focus," an annual publication designed to enrich stakeholder community with updates and insights, fostering stronger connections and informed collaboration.
