Dar es Salaam. For history enthusiasts, 1933 was a year of remarkable inventions: in the United States, engineer Edwin Armstrong introduced FM radio, the first drive-in theatre opened in Camden, New Jersey, and Warner Bros. Cartoons came to life.

In the same year, in what was then Tanganyika, Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) was founded, becoming one of East Africa’s pioneering beverage companies.

Since then, TBL has established itself as a major player in the region, producing a wide range of beers, alcoholic fruit drinks, non-alcoholic beverages, spirits, and wines, including Safari Lager, Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, Castle Lager, Konyagi Gin and Dodoma Wines.

Over the decades, TBL has gained commercial recognition, including Safari Lager being named Best Beer in Africa in 2016. The company has also received several awards for manufacturing and compliance, including the President’s Manufacturer of the Year, the International Gold Crown Award (IGCA) in 2020, and recognition as Tanzania Revenue Authority’s Best Taxpayer of the Year in 2023.

Beyond commercial success, TBL has maintained a commitment to social responsibility and sustainability. The company has prioritised water conservation and efficiency, for example, improving access to clean water in Arusha through borehole projects.

TBL has also been involved in tree planting and river-cleaning initiatives, particularly along the Themi River, aiming to support local ecosystems and environmental health.

In 2025, TBL expanded support for agriculture, working with over 2,500 sorghum and barley farmers in Central and Northern Tanzania.

These farmers received financial inclusion, training, and extension services to support sustainable practices. The company also engaged with more than 25,000 retailers and suppliers, providing guidance and ensuring fair compensation.

Within its workforce of over 1,200 employees, TBL has promoted a safe and inclusive environment, reporting zero fatalities last year.

TBL’s history demonstrates that growth and sustainability can go hand in hand. Over nine decades, the company has not only become one of East Africa’s leading breweries but has also contributed to environmental protection, community development, and responsible business practices across Tanzania.
