Dar es Salaam. The government said yesterday it was joining forces with the private sector to send a joint team to the African Mining Indaba 2024.
The move is part of an aggressive campaign to attract investors to the Tanzanian mineral sector’s value chain. The mining forum will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, from February 5 to 8.
The minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, said yesterday that during the Indaba, the government would engage in dialogue with international companies providing services in the mineral sector to enter into partnerships with local companies, a move aimed at ensuring Tanzanians benefit from the economy gleaned from the mineral sector.
Since 1994, the African Mining Indaba has been a place for deal sourcing and corporate matchmaking in the African mining industry.
It has and continues to serve as the most comprehensive gathering for investment, finance, innovation, and transformation to support end-to-end value creation.
Speaking to stakeholders in the mining sector recently, Mr Mavunde said it is the first time Tanzania is participating in the event as a country with a common voice and not as individuals, as it has been done for many years.
“We are writing history by working together with the private sector to profile our country under the theme Advancing Mining Investment to Accelerate Prosperity,” he said.
He noted that Tanzania is endowed with different types of minerals, and therefore they expect to attract investors to invest in the stages that collectively form the mining value chain.
This encompasses the entire lifecycle of mining operations, from extraction to market delivery.
A representative of the Tanzania World Auction Gemstone Company, David Mponda, advised the government to use the conference as an opportunity to advertise the Tanzanite minerals found only in the country to stimulate tourism and investment.
“We should let the world know that Tanzanite is only found in Tanzania to attract investors through the entire value chain,” he said.
On her part, the Chief Executive of Women in Mining in Tanzania, Lightness Salema, advised the government to create a conducive environment that will attract the participation of women in the sector.
