Dar es Salaam. Tigo Tanzania, Milvik Tanzania and Resolution Insurance yesterday introduced an improved insurance service called Bima Mkononi.

The service is an improvement from Tigo Bima which the mobile phone company introduced five years. Over 500,000 subscribers have so far benefited from Tigo Bima.

Initially, a subscriber would pay the premiums via airtime while in the new approach, one will be required to pay via Tigo Pesa.

Tigo Mkononi offers life insurance, hospitalisation and personal accident cover for customers who actively use Tigo Pesa.

The Milvik country manager in Tanzania, Mr Tom Chaplin, believes Tigo Mkononi will increase the number of Tanzanians who access financial services. “With the increase in mobile penetration in both urban and rural Tanzania, we believe Bima Mkononi will be a major boost to push financial inclusion in the informal sector by enabling Tanzanians to access affordable insurance services from their phones,” he said. The cover offers protection from financial risks and poor health for the mobile phone firm’s clients and their families. The head of mobile financial services at Tigo, Mr Ruan Swanepoel, said the service will enable the company’s clients to get access insurance easily.

He commended Mr Milvik for the partnership and affirmed Tigo’s commitment to continue providing support through Tigo Pesa.
