President Tebboune affirmed Algeria's commitment as the voice of the African continent
Algiers. Among Algeria's main priorities in the Security Council is the issue of the reform of this Council, a process considered essential to establish a more representative, fair and balanced international system.
In the UN Security Council the Algeria's role in the unification of Africa's voice highlighted.
The current international context, marked by multiple crises and geopolitical changes, as well as the multidimensional and multiform threats facing the African continent, such as terrorism, wars, climate change and health, energy and food crisis, highlight the importance of this reform.
In this regard, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared, before the UN GA, that the acceleration of negotiations on Security Council reform should be "a priority for the international community".
In its new mission as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, Algeria "will succeed, without a shadow of a doubt, thanks to its vision and fundamental principles, to contribute effectively and actively, in agreement with all the Member States of the Council, to the strengthening and promotion of international peace and security", these are also the words of President Tebboune.
On 6th June, 2023, 184 countries out of the 193 voters (95 percent of the votes) voted +YES+ in favor of Algeria to enjoy the status of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. And on 2nd January, 2024, Algeria began this mandate alongside the other non-permanent members that are Sierra Leone, South Korea, Guyana and Slovenia. An official ceremony was organized on this occasion in the presence of the permanent representatives of the five countries entering the Council.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Bendjama reaffirmed "the unwavering commitment of Algerian diplomacy, on the instructions of the President of the Republic, to actively contribute to the promotion of the values of peace and the virtues of dialogue in order to overcome disputes and strengthen international cooperation".
During its mandate for the period 2024-2025, Algeria will thus contribute within the Security Council to the unification of Africa's voice for better advocacy in favor of the continent's priority issues and its legitimate aspirations. This is one of the main priorities of the country elected to this position, for the fourth time in its history.
President Tebboune affirmed Algeria's commitment to "work tirelessly to make the voice of the continent and its legitimate demands heard and to repair the historical injustice it has suffered", during the meeting of the Committee of the 10 of the African Union (AU), responsible for the reform of the Security Council, held last February in Addis Ababa.
