Tanzania to manufacture high quality cables for African and global markets

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania is gearing up to become a key player in electrical equipment manufacturing, aiming to not only fulfill domestic needs but also conquer African and international markets.

Industry and Trade Minister Dr. Ashatu Kijaji recently visited Multi Cable Limited (MCL), a Dar es Salaam-based factory showcasing the nation's progress in this sector.

Dr. Kijaji emphasized the importance of local producers tapping into the vast potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). "The quality of products made here, certified by Tanzania's Bureau of Standards (TBS), makes them competitive in the AfCFTA," she stated.

MCL's impressive portfolio which include transformers, meters, and cables, impressed the Minister.

She commended the company for supplying Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) and Rural Electrification Agency (REA) with locally made electrical cables, signifying a leap towards self-sufficiency in this crucial sector.

"Our presence in regional markets like the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) ensures ready buyers for our products," Dr. Kijaji pointed out.

She declared the government's commitment to facilitating market access for local manufacturers.

The Minister acknowledged the over 1,000 jobs generated by such industries, highlighting the positive impact on employment and economic growth. She urged MCL to continuously improve employee welfare and work environment.

MCL's legal counsel, Kassmary Ahmed, expressed confidence in their ability to compete globally.

"We've been manufacturing top-notch electrical equipment since 2002, and our goal is to create more jobs and contribute to national economic development while constantly enhancing product quality," he asserted.

Tanzania's strides in electrical manufacturing are promising, with MCL serving as a prime example of the nation's potential.
