Sumbawanga. The police force in the Rukwa Region has arrested three individuals in connection with the death of 15-year-old Novatus Adelhard Mgeni, a Form Four student at Kagwa Secondary School in Sumbawanga Municipality.
Those arrested include Zacharia Mwasenga (45), the headmaster of St. Kagwa Secondary School, and two security guards, Michael Donasio (33) and Geofrey Simon (30).
They are accused of assaulting Mgeni and two other students on the night of March 23, 2025.
According to Rukwa Regional Police Commander SACP Justin Masija, the three suspects attacked the students with wires after they were allegedly caught jumping over the fence that separates Kagwa Secondary School from St. Kagwa Secondary School.
The students had entered the girls’ dormitory, where they were apprehended by the guards and subsequently beaten.
Following the assault, the two surviving students were taken to Sumbawanga Police Station and later treated at Sumbawanga Regional Referral Hospital.
While they were discharged after receiving medical care, Mgeni’s condition worsened, and he was transferred to Mbeya Regional Referral Hospital, where he passed away while undergoing treatment.
Mr Masija condemned the act of vigilantism and urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. He called on the community to ensure that suspects are brought to the police for due legal process.
The three suspects are expected to face charges once the investigation is concluded.
