  • The minister fell in the trap after Mr Mohammed alerted the president about the bribe the minister had asked for to forego the case of a lady, who accuses the businessman of sexual harassment.

Kampala. State Minister for Labour Herbert Kabafunzaki was arrested at Serena Hotel in Kampala for allegedly receiving a bribe of Sh20 million (USh30 million) from Mr Hamid Mohammed, the proprietor of Aya Investment Limited.

The minister fell in the trap after Mr Mohammed alerted the president about the bribe the minister had asked for to forego the case of a lady, who accuses the businessman of sexual harassment.

The detectives arrested the minister receiving a deposit of the suggested amount. He was found hiding in hotel toilets with the money.

Kabafunzaki, who is also the MP for Rukiga County, was arrested together with Brian Mugabo, a clearing agent.

According to Hamid, the minister was allegedly arrested with an envelope containing the money by a combined team of Special Forces Command and Police at around 3pm.

Hamid said President Yoweri Museveni was informed about the minister’s demand from which Police was tipped.

Addressing the media shortly after the arrest Hamid said he was approached by Mugabo who claimed the Minister had sent him to solicit for the money.

“He solicited for money and we talked to the President and other authorities, who advised us on how to go about him. He first asked for Sh25 million, we bargained up to Sh10 million,” Hamid said.
