Dar es Salaam. Singeli music, renowned for its fast-paced rhythms and energetic beats, has taken Tanzania by storm.
The genre’s influence has extended beyond national borders, with some international artists praising Singeli and even considering it a potential Grammy-winning sound.
However, despite its growing popularity and the success of several Singeli artists on global stages, the genre still faces significant obstacles that hinder its full international breakthrough.
While Singeli has gained considerable recognition both locally and internationally, it remains in limbo, struggling to fully capitalise on its potential.
The Tanzania Singeli Music Association (TASIMA) Chairman, Mr Massoud Kandoro—better known by his stage name Kandoro Baba—outlined the key challenges facing the genre.
"The lack of opportunities, the absence of formal structures for Singeli artists, and limited collaboration with key stakeholders are major barriers preventing the genre from reaching greater heights," he said.
These concerns were addressed in a crucial meeting between TASIMA and the National Arts Council (Basata) at Basata’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam.
The discussions centered on strategies to promote, protect, and develop Singeli music, ensuring it remains a pillar of Tanzania’s cultural identity while expanding its global reach.
Basata commended TASIMA for its commitment to advancing Singeli, recognising the substantial investments made to elevate the genre.
The council also assured continued support to help Singeli meet international standards and gain the respect and recognition it deserves worldwide.
This meeting marks a pivotal step in solidifying Singeli as a key cultural art form in Tanzania.
Despite Singeli’s impressive strides, much more needs to be done to ensure its success on the global stage.
