As one of the few female artistes to break into the top echelons of Tanzania’s streaming charts, Zuchu’s inclusion in Spotify Wrapped 2024 is noteworthy.
She stands out in a field that has historically been male-dominated, joining the ranks of Tanzania’s leading artistes such as Marioo, Diamond Platnumz, and Harmonize, who secured the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively.
Notably, Alikiba, another celebrated Tanzanian artiste, rounded out the top 10.
“Among the most-streamed artistes is Zuchu, who has emerged as a leading female figure in the Bongo Flava scene,” Spotify notes.
“She continues to make her mark alongside other female artistes like Nandy and Phina.”
Zuchu’s song Zawadi is featured as one of the most-streamed songs in Tanzania for the year, highlighting her reach and influence in the music scene.
The track, alongside Marioo’s Hakuna Matata and Diamond Platnumz’s Mapoz featuring Mr. Blue & Jay Melody, cemented her as a top artiste in the country.
Her recent single, Siji, also contributed to her strong showing, showcasing her ability to remain relevant and impactful with new releases.
Spotify’s data reflects that nine out of the top 10 most-streamed songs in Tanzania were performed by African artistes, with Zuchu’s Zawadi and Siji standing as a testament to the increasing recognition of female artistes in the industry.
“Her songs are not just popular locally but resonate with audiences across the continent,” Spotify emphasises in their analysis.
Zuchu, born Zuhura Othman Soud, has roots in Tanzania’s rich musical tradition through her mother, the legendary taarab singer Khadija Kopa.
This heritage has shaped Zuchu’s musical style, which merges traditional Swahili melodies with contemporary Afrobeat influences.
The result is a sound that is both familiar and refreshing, resonating with fans of all ages.
