Five students win NBC scholarships

Speaking during a farewell ceremony in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the human resources business partner at NBC Ltd, Ms Pamela Kieti-Sweke said that the goal of the programme is to promote self reliance and innovative skills among students in the country through essay writing competitions.

Dar es Salaam. The National Bank of Commerce (NBC) is sponsoring five Fform Ssix graduates through its scholarship programme to African Leadership University in Rwanda for three and four years courses as part of the Nelson Mandela scholarships awards programme, which seeks to identify innovative skills among young Africans.

Speaking during a farewell ceremony in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the human resources business partner at NBC Ltd, Ms Pamela Kieti-Sweke said that the goal of the programme is to promote self reliance and innovative skills among students in the country through essay writing competitions.

She noted that the competition involved thousands of students from different schools in Tanzania and that the essays were marked through different criteria such as creativity, ability to write, innovation, talent and personal experience writing.

“These are among the competent ones whose essays were impressive. Their writings can surely bring positive impacts to the society,” she said.

She said that the programme is part and parcel of the bank’s efforts in supporting the fifth phase government in its various endeavours to bring development.

For her part, NBC citizenship manager Irene Peter added that the programme was meant to identity skills that were hidden among the youth in both rural and urban areas by enabling them to compete through the Nelson Mandela Scholarship platform.

She underscored that three students from Arusha ssecondary schools and others are from Dar es Salaam and Iringa region.

“Tthey will be leaving for Rwanda on Saturday where they will pursue three and four-year courses. They will also receive leadership training for the first six months of their stay in Kigali,” and others will are leaving off on Saturday this week to Rwanda for a three and four years courses they will undergo a six months training on leadership skills thereafter a full funded program either in ICT or Telecommunication they are going to choose themselves,” she noted.

Fatuma Ibrahim from Dar es Salaam, one of the lucky selected students, said s among thousands of applicants who apply the program across the country said that she was happy with the s is very pleased with the scholarship and promised to work hard and accomplish her dream of becoming a competent engto do the best of her ability and to be become one of the competent engineer.

He underscored that during his earlier days in school in Iringa he managed to open up and created a website that his fellow students can have access for various materials such as noted, books and literature studies.

Since its inception in 2003 through the Mandela Rhodes Foundation a total of 200 Mandela Rhodes Scholarships have been awarded.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Rhodes Trust via Mandela Rhodes Foundation offer Rhodes Scholarships to African students each year. The scholarships are totally concerned to the benefit of current and future generations of Africans.
