Hundreds pay respects to UDSM students, workers

Dar es Salaam. Thousands of mourners yesterday paid their last respects to two students and two staff members of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), who died in a road accident on Monday.
The requiem mass was held at UDSM Nkrumah Hall where coffins bearing the bodies of senior driver James Kagwebe, assistant nurse Jonathan Lung’ando and students Erasto Sango and, Mary Soko were paraded .
Speaking during the service, UDSM deputy vice chancellor for Administration, Prof David Mfinanga, said the deceased would be remembered for their good attitude during their life times.
“There is no way we can control God’s plan… they were part of our fraternity and we should remember them by living in accordance with what religious books say. We have to continue loving each other,” he said.
Prof Mfinanga added that the university would foot the costs of the funeral.
He also delivered condolences from the university’s chancellor and former Tanzanian president of, Dr Jakaya Kikwete. The four died after the ambulance they had boarded was hit by a lorry at Ubungo as they were heading to the hospital.
The accident left a third year industrial engineering student, Mr Nkiko Bende, with injuries. He is recovering at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH)
The four died after the ambulance collided head-on with a truck at Riverside area in Ubungo on Monday night.
Two died on the spot, while two others succumbed to injuries the following day.
