  • Taifa Gas General Manager Devis Deogratius said the company will work closely with the government to ensure that the goal of raising the population of households that use clean cooking energy rises from the current ten percent to 80 percent by 2034.

Dodoma. Taifa Gas said this week that it was determined to play a key role in the government’s goal of raising the use of clean cooking energy to 80 percent of the population by the year 2034.

Speaking during an event to mark this year’s World Environment Day here on Tuesday, Taifa Gas General Manager Devis Deogratius said the company will work closely with the government to ensure that the goal of raising the population of households that use clean cooking energy rises from the current ten percent to 80 percent by 2034.

In attendance at the event were several high-profile government officials, led by the Vice President, Dr Philip Mpango, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Dr Seleman Jafo, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr Mussa Zungu and other players dealing with environmental conservation.

During the event, Dr Mpango awarded Taifa Gas Limited a special distinction for its exemplary efforts in environmental conservation and commitment.

According to Mr Deogratius, the company is currently distributing free gas cylinders to underprivileged households in an effort to boost the use of clean cooking energy in line with the government’s aspirations.

“Since last year, Taifa Gas has distributed 20,000 gas cylinders valued at Sh1.52 billion to underprivileged Tanzanians to advance this campaign,” he said, adding, “We pledge to continue with our partnership with the government in attaining the 2034 goal.”

Last month, President Samia Suluhu Hassan launched the National Strategy for Clean Cooking Energy for the ten-year period from 2024 to 2034, which envisions raising the population of Tanzanian households that use clean cooking energy from the current ten percent to 80 percent by the year 2034.

The strategy will require the government to undertake a raft of measures, including announcing a complete ban on the use of dirty cooking energy for institutions that feed over 100 people at any given time. The government, development partners, and members of the private sector will have to source a total of $1.8 billion (about Sh4.6 trillion) to implement the strategy.
