‘The Citizen’ writer Zephania Ubwani dies at 70

Ubwani, 70, who wrote for The Citizen, a product of Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) for almost two decades, died suddenly on Saturday, April 6, 2024, in Arusha.
The MCL management announced on Saturday that Ubwani, who also used to contribute stories to The EastAfrican and Daily Nation of Kenya as well as Daily Monitor of Uganda, will be remembered for his prowess in writing stories about the East African Community (EAC).
He also wrote comprehensively about tourism, business, economy and minerals, among other topics. His latest story for The Citizen was published a day before he died.
“We extend our condolences to Ubwani’s family and the entire media fraternity in Arusha. We promise to cooperate with them in every step of the funeral…May his soul rest in peace,” MCL said in a statement.
Ubwani started his journalism career at the government-owned Daily News, but later moved to MCL almost two decades ago.
At one point, he was MCL’s Bureau Chief in Arusha until he attained retirement age.
A prolific writer, Ubwani remained with the company and worked as a senior correspondent, with his base in Arusha.
Burial arrangements are being conducted at the funeral home at Kimandolu in Arusha.
Ubwani was born on September 12, 1953. He leaves behind a widow and four sons.
