  • Mr Ally Mohamed Kibao, a specialist in the secretariat, was reportedly taken by unidentified individuals on Friday evening, as he was travelling to Tanga.

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s main opposition Chadema has denounced the “abduction” of the party national secretariat member, which heightens concerns over the security of its members.

Mr Ally Mohamed Kibao, a specialist in the secretariat, was reportedly taken by unidentified individuals on Friday evening, as he was travelling to Tanga.

Chadema secretary general, Mr John Mnyika, told reporters on September 7, 2024 that Mr Kibao was compulsorily taken by the armed people who blocked the bus at Tegeta area of Dar es Salaam.

He said Chadema had no information on Mr Kibao's whereabouts or the identity of his captors, demanding the police, the intelligence agency, and the government to clarify what they know about the incident.

"The bus was stopped by two unmarked vehicles," Mr Mnyika said.

"Individuals armed with guns exited the vehicles. One of them instructed the bus driver not to move, while two others boarded the bus. They went directly to where Mr Kibao was seated and forcibly took him," he added.

Mr Mnyika further detailed that another individual, who had been pretending to be a passenger, joined the abductors.

"These individuals did not identify themselves as police, but they were armed and even handcuffed him," he said.

In response to the allegations, the police issued a public statement signed by spokesperson, Mr David Misime, who acknowledged that the law enforcement agency had heard the reports through social media platforms and Chadema press conference.

"The Police would like to inform the public that it received the report and has commenced investigation to determine what happened, the cause, and the individuals involved," reads part of the police statement.

The incident adds to a growing list of disappearances and abductions in the country, a trend that has left many Tanzanians questioning their safety. Human rights groups have repeatedly called on the government to investigate the cases and ensure the safety of all citizens.

Mr Mnyika said the timing of Mr Kibao's disappearance is particularly concerning, given the upcoming local government elections.

“Such incidents may disrupt peace ahead of the local government election,” he said.

He also used the press conference to remind citizens about the importance of participating in the electoral process.

"The election timetable has already been made public. From August 30 to September 17, 2024, institutions are required to submit applications to observe the elections. There are only 10 days left for this exercise, and it is crucial to have many observers," Mr Mnyika emphasised.

He also reminded the public to register for voting. The registration is scheduled for October 11 to 20, 2024.

"There is false information circulating that only a voter ID card will allow a person to vote. We urge everyone to register as a voter and ensure they are on the voter register," he said.

Chadema is preparing for a central committee meeting to discuss the security situation and determine the appropriate course of action.
