Chadema wins Arusha deputy mayoral election

Arusha. Chadema has won the election for the city’s deputy after its candidate, Mr Paulo Matthysen defeated the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi candidate Mr Prosper Msofe.
The election took place on Monday, August 27, 2018 immediately after a ceremony to swear in four CCM councilors, who defected from the opposition to the ruling party and went on to win the by-elections.
Mr Matthysen (Moshon) scooped 27 votes against 7 of Mf Mr Msofe (Daraja Mbili).
Announcing the results, city council lawyer, Mr Grayson Orcado said a total of 34 councillors voted during the election and that no vote was rejected.
Addressing citizens after the victory, Arusha City Council Mayor, Mr Kalist Lazaro, said the victory proves that the party is still strong in the city despite the wave of defections.
“However, today we have welcomed the new City Council Director, Dr Maulid Madeni who was recently appointed by President John Magufuli. We promise him that we will cooperate with him for the betterment of Arusha residents,” he said.
He said during the meeting for the fourth quarter of the 2017/18 fiscal year, all committee chairperson were elected from the main opposition party, Chadema.
Mr Lazaro said the Sombetini Councillor, Mr Ally Bananga has been elected chairman of the City Planning Committee, while the Ngarenaro Councillor, Mr Isaya Doita becomes the chairman of the Education, Health and Economic Committee.
In another development, the four councillors, who won the August 12, by-election were sworn in before commencing the elections.
They include Mr Msofe, Kaloleni Councillor Emmanuel Kessy, Terati Councillor Obedi Meng'oriki and Osunyai Council Elirehema Nnko.
