Dar es Salaam police hunt for daladala driver after crash kills Chanika police chief

Dar es Salaam. The Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police are searching for a daladala driver responsible for a fatal road accident that claimed the life of the Officer Commanding District (OCD) for Chanika Police District Awadh Chico.

The crash also injured another officer, Zubeda Sadala.

The accident occurred at 7:20 AM on Monday, March 17, 2025, along Nyerere Road near Pugu Mwisho wa Lami in Dar es Salaam. The collision involved a Tata minibus operating on the Zingiziwa–Chanika–Machinga Complex–Ilala route and a Toyota Prado.

According to Zonal Commander for Dar es Salaam, Mr Faustine Mafwele, the crash was caused by the daladala driver's reckless overtaking, which led to a head-on collision.

"The Police Force is searching for the unidentified daladala driver who fled the scene after causing the accident… CP Awadhi Juma Haji," Mafwele said.

Chico was traveling from Gongo la Mboto to Pugu when the accident occurred. He succumbed to his injuries, while Officer Sadala, who was a passenger, sustained a broken left arm and is receiving medical treatment.

Mafwele urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations, particularly during ongoing road maintenance, to prevent further accidents caused by driver negligence.

The police continue their search for the runaway driver as investigations into the incident proceed.
