Drivers to pay Sh10m for personalised number plates

Drivers have been parting with Sh5 million to get personalised number plates. For those who actually have personalised numbers, they are regarded as a status symbol, a statement of individuality or an investment. But to the vast majority that don't have one they're an ostentatious waste of cash.

Dar es Salaam. Motorists who prefer private plate numbers will now have to fork out Sh10 million – as the government moves to cash in on an increasing number of Tanzanians willing to splash millions on making a statement on the road.

Drivers have been parting with Sh5 million to get personalised number plates. For those who actually have personalised numbers, they are regarded as a status symbol, a statement of individuality or an investment. But to the vast majority that don't have one they're an ostentatious waste of cash.

In the 2016/2017 financial year, the government indicated Wednesday it targets to rake in at least Sh26.9 billion in registration and transfer of ownership fees from the country’s ever-rising numbers of motorists.

The Motor Vehicle (Tax Registration and Transfer) Act No 124 of 2006 will be amended to increase the cost of motor vehicle and motorcycle registration and transfer.
