Fight for your rights, Seif tells supporters

Civic United Front (CUF) secretary-general Maalim Seif Sharif

What you need to know:

He said that there had been many obstacles and excuses to prevent CUF members and supporters from demanding their victory. Maalim Seif said many of the supporters had been tortured after being implicated in cooked up cases.

Zanzibar. Civic United Front (CUF) secretary-general Maalim Seif Sharif on Thursday wound up his two-week tour of Unguja and Pemba and urged supporters to peacefully demand for their victory of the October, 2015 General Election. He was speaking at a CUF executive committee meeting in Unguja West District.

He said that there had been many obstacles and excuses to prevent CUF members and supporters from demanding their victory. Maalim Seif said many of the supporters had been tortured after being implicated in cooked up cases.

The CUF secretary-general insisted that his party would continue with preparations to file a case of human right violations against innocent civilians by state organs at the International Criminal Court.

The tour is the first for Maalim Seif since the Zanzibar Electoral Commission announced to cancel last year’s General Election results. Several people, who turned out at his meeting were wounded by the police, who attempted to disperse them.

Police quizzed Mr Maalim Sharif on Wednesday and interrogated him for three hours before he was released. He had blamed the police for beating up and injuring people, who turned out in big numbers to receive him wherever he went.
