Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Tennis Association (TTA) has announced eight tennis players ahead of the U-14 International Tennis Federation/Confederation of African Tennis (ITF/CAT) Eastern Africa Zone Tennis Championships, set to be held at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana this month.
The players who will compete in the boys' category are Ethan Dzidzornu from Azura Fitness Club, Hamisi Rungu (Makongo Dar es Salaam), Ibrahim Jibe (Morogoro Club), and Emmanuel John from AICC Club Arusha, according to TTA coordinator Khalid Mrisho.
Mrisho named the girls' category players as Nasma Gallawa and Ismaiya (both from Makongo Club Dar es Salaam), Zahra (Morogoro Tennis Academy), and Hadija Msangi from Arusha Gymkhana Club.
All players are now in intensive training ahead of the international competition, scheduled to take place from April 6 to 9, followed by the second leg from April 10 to 13 at the same venue.
The competition will feature young tennis players from 10 countries. The event will feature both individual and team competitions. In the individual category, players will compete for top honors based on their performance in singles and doubles matches.
The team event, on the other hand, will see nations battling against each other in a format that promotes teamwork and national pride. Mrisho expressed confidence in Tanzania’s chances, highlighting the team’s talent, commitment, and rigorous preparations ahead of the championship.
“We have selected talented and committed tennis players. Both our boys’ and girls’ teams are undergoing intensive training in preparation for the event,” said Mrisho.
TTA Secretary General Comfort Ismail echoed Mrisho’s sentiments, stressing the significance of this tournament for young players aiming to make a mark in regional tennis.
"We expect a thrilling and competitive event, as every player will be aiming for silverware. This tournament is a great platform for young talents to showcase their skills and gain international experience," said Comfort.
She further stressed the importance of hosting the championship after more than a decade.
