The two manufacturers namely; Iron and Steel Ltd and MMI Integrated Mills Ltd were found disposing liquid, which is dangerous for both the environment and people.

Deputy state minister in the Vice-President’s Office, Union and Environment, Mr Kangi Lugola, called on the owners to resolve the issue with the National Environment Management Council (NEMC), failure of which law will take its course.

“Owners of the industries must meet Nemc officials between June 4 and July 4 to solve this problem which entails flow of seepage, smoke discharge and other threats to environment,” Mr Lugola said.

He added that during said period the owners must present a comprehensive plan on waste disposal.

The deputy minister told the production manager of Iron & Steel Ltd, Mr Johari Badri, that while the government supports building of industries, it cannot tolerate those who fail to observe the waste disposal law.

The chairman of Mikocheni B local government, Mr Sixbert Qamdiye, said the residents have been complaining about improper industrial waste disposal, but their complaints fell on deaf ears.

Mr Qamdiye expressed his thanks to the minister for intervening.

The Nemc Eastern Zonal Coordinator, Mr Jafar Chimgege, said the area has many industries, but most of them observe the law.

He said a follow-up meeting will be held between Nemc functionaries and owners of industries in the area.
