Five discharged after cargo train, passenger bus collision in Tanzania’s Kigoma Region

Kigoma. Five of the six people injured in a recent accident involving a cargo train and a passenger bus have been discharged from Kigoma Regional Referral Hospital, Maweni, following medical treatment.

The accident, which occurred on November 9, 2024, at approximately 10:10 p.m., involved a cargo train and a passenger bus operated by A.N. Company, which was en route from Kigoma to Dodoma. The collision left nine individuals injured.

Speaking by phone, Kigoma Regional Referral Hospital’s Medical Officer-in-Charge, Dr Stanley Binagi, confirmed that six injured people were admitted to Maweni Hospital in critical condition that morning.

“After receiving treatment, five of the patients have been discharged, while one remains hospitalized due to fractures in two leg bones,” Dr. Binagi said, adding that the patient is under close observation and is awaiting surgery.

Dr Binagi identified the patients as Dosian Mpungu, who will undergo surgery for his injuries, and Swaleh Jomanga, Rahima Msangi, Selemani Hamis, Mussa Abilo, and Ilambona Solube, who were all discharged after treatment.

Kigoma Regional Police Commander, Filemon Makungu, confirmed that no fatalities occurred. The cause of the accident has been attributed to the bus driver’s negligence in failing to take precautions at the railway crossing.

“Three of the nine injured were treated at Nguruka Health Center, while the remaining six were referred to Maweni Hospital for further care,” Commander Makungu said.
