Dar es Salaam. After steering Tanzania’s leading opposition party, Chadema, through two tumultuous decades of political battles, transformative campaigns, and unyielding advocacy for democracy, Mr Freeman Mbowe’s tenure as chairman has officially come to an end.

In a historic and symbolic shift, the party has chosen Mr Tundu Lissu, a fiery and resolute advocate for human rights, to succeed him. This decision signals a bold new chapter for Chadema and the country's political landscape, encapsulating the resilience of a party committed to change and the legacy of a leader who defined its modern identity.

A legacy of leadership

Freeman Mbowe assumed the chairmanship of Chadema in 2004, succeeding Bob Makani. Over his 21-year tenure, Mbowe was instrumental in transforming Chadema from a nascent political entity into a formidable opposition force within Tanzania's political landscape. Under his stewardship, the party expanded its grassroots presence, introduced innovative political campaigns, and consistently advocated for democratic reforms.

The transition

The decision to elect Tundu Lissu as the new chairman was made during Chadema's General Assembly meeting held at Mlimani City conference hall in Dar es Salaam.

“I wholeheartedly accept the decisions made during our party Chadema’s General Assembly election, which concluded this morning, 22 January 2025. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mr Tundu Lissu and his team for being entrusted with the responsibility of leading the party. I wish them every success in advancing our party's mission.” – Mr Freeman Mbowe

Lissu, who previously served as the party's vice chairman (Mainland), is known for his robust advocacy for human rights and democratic principles. His election signifies a new chapter for Chadema as it navigates the evolving political dynamics of Tanzania.

Mbowe's reflections

In the lead-up to the elections, Mbowe had been contemplative about his future role within the party. During a press conference, he remarked, "This party has never denied anyone the chance to contest for any position. I have never stood alone, nor have I ever prevented anyone from vying for a position."

These statements underscored his commitment to democratic processes within the party and his openness to leadership transitions.

Challenges and achievements

Throughout his tenure, Mbowe faced numerous challenges, including political repression and internal party dynamics. Despite these hurdles, he remained steadfast in his commitment to Chadema's ideals. Under his leadership, the party not only increased its parliamentary representation but also became a vocal advocate for a new constitution and electoral reforms in Tanzania.

Looking forward

As Tundu Lissu takes on the mantle of leadership, Chadema stands at a crossroads. The party's commitment to democratic principles and its role as a check on governmental power remain as crucial as ever. Lissu's leadership is anticipated to bring renewed energy and focus to the party's objectives, building upon the solid foundation laid by Mbowe.

Freeman Mbowe's departure from the chairmanship does not mark an end to his political journey. His extensive experience and deep understanding of Tanzania's political fabric position him as a continued influential figure within Chadema and the broader political discourse. As the party embarks on this new chapter, the legacy of Mbowe's leadership will undoubtedly continue to influence its direction and strategies in the pursuit of a more democratic Tanzania.
