JP Magufuli bridge construction reaches final stage

What you need to know:

  • Construction is now 90.5 percent complete. Work is ongoing day and night, and the bridge is expected to be fully connected by early October 2024.

Dar es Salaam. The 3-kilometre JP Magufuli Bridge, which will connect the Usagara-Sengerema-Geita road across Lake Victoria, is nearly finished, with only a 2-meter section left to complete.

This update was shared on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in Mwanza by the Minister of Works, Innocent Bashungwa, during his visit to the bridge site.

His visit also included the ongoing construction of a 1.66-kilometre road on both the Kigongo and Busisi sides.

"I walked the entire 3 kilometres of the JP Magufuli Bridge, and I am pleased with the progress. We have only 2 meters left to finish the bridge, along with the connecting roads, which are also being built," Bashungwa said.

He thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for supporting the vision of the late John Magufuli and for providing funding to ensure the bridge is completed on time.

Bashungwa mentioned that the government is making sure the contractor gets paid. Recently, the contractor received 18 billion shillings to help complete the bridge by December 2024.

He also praised the Mwanza Regional Roads Agency (TANROADS) Manager, the consulting engineer from Yooshin Engineering Corporation (Korea), and the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, for their hard work.

Bashungwa noted that building the bridge has given local experts and graduates a chance to gain skills and experience, reducing the need for foreign experts.

Abdulkarim Majuto, the consulting engineer for the bridge, said that construction is now 90.5 percent complete. Work is ongoing day and night, and the bridge is expected to be fully connected by early October 2024.
